GROUNDHOGS – Live at Anti WAA Festival 1989  (CD or DVD)

Once upon a time, a long time ago, before the ice armour of political correctness froze the country deep und made submission the principle of society again, then there was a time when the youth of Germany and Europe took to the streets and fought for specific political aims: not only the youth, but all people,  of all degrees of education, all age groups and all political camps (from left to center to the right) …

1989 marked, at least for Germany, the turning and, at the same time, final point …
People from a small region in Germany, Upper Palatia in northern Bavaria, rose up against corporate power, here the power of energy trusts;  they rose against the construction of a new nuclear reprocessing plant … and they won … and maybe they saved us from an extreme disaster like later in Fukushima, or in 1979 Harrisburg or in 1986 in Chernobyl.
And the people had WON … and the people celebrated a big party, the last ANTI WAA Festival, on July 15 and 16, 1989!

In the same period of time, millions of people already had risen up, in eastern Germany, to storm and take down a totalitarian stalinist system, full of human despise. And also they won … at first; and also they celebrated a big party, as can be seen in the media for their 25th anniversary celebartions.
These were the last great victories of independance in this country.

The GROUNDHOGS have  never been a political band, as guitar icon Tony McPhee states in interview as can be seen and heard on this DVD. They are strictly working class.
John Lee Hooker’s favourite European support band, played heavy music; they played the blues so hard and raunchy, pimped with new elements, almost prog, that your ears fell off and left your mouth open. LIKE THIS not even the godfathers of Blues, with whom (e.g. John Lee Hooker, Eddie Boyd, Junior Wells, Champion Jack Dupree, Luther Allison …) the GROUNDHOGS had worked many times, had heard their music before: METAL PROG BLUES!!!

Esp. around that time they were absolute club favourites all over Europe once more.

BLUE CHEERs record label and management, at the time, based in Regensburg, were asked, if they could contribute any artists to the already impressive line up of the festival. They could!
First BLUE CHEER were added; and also Bob Dylan’s  congenial „support“ band THE BAND had already consented; but the latter, now in their turn, could not make it, due to „substantial“ problems of Rick Danko (r.i.p.) A “replacement” was soon found with the iconic UK heroes, THE GROUNDHOGS around guitar legend Tony McPhee (admired from the Stones to Hendrix to Gallagher). McPhee asked by BLUE CHEER, also joined them at their gig for a jam session of “Hoochie Coochie Man”, which can be heard and seen both on this CD and DVD.
This marked the beginning of a lifelong close friendship between the two bands and their members.

The financial budget of the festival was tight. Nevertheless the band consisting of Tony McPhee (guitar,  vocals), Dave Anderson (Bass; ex- Amon Düül II, ex-Hawkwind, ex-Van der Graaf Generator) and Mick Jones (drums; later with Chicken Shack), wanted to follow the call from Regensburg at just any conditions.  During these times The GROUNDHOGS spent many an off day in Regensburg/Upper Palatia (northern Bavaria), but also played many a legendary gig around there. (Legendary still Tony McPhee’s jam session of Bob Dylan’s „Knockin‘ on Heaven’s Door“ with our friend and Tony’s soulmate Rory Gallagher – r.i.p. - at his Regensburg gig on december 12th, 1987).
Well the fee was not even enough for airfares to take the band to the festival. So, the three brave men plus one roadie cramped their backline and themselves into a mini-van and drove all the way from the welsh border to northern Bavaria; they slept for a few hours, played, stayed for BLUE CHEER’s show, as Tony McPhee had been requested to join them for a jam; slept another few hours and then drove another full day back to their homes at the welsh border.

This should be mentioned as the festival organizers were confronted with heavy reproaches that they had engaged only money greedy rip-off bands who had nothing to do with the festival cause:
both, BLUE CHEER and the GROUNDHOGS had and have a close connection with Regensburg and Upper Palatia … and the fees did not eve cover the travel expenses … or barely!

The GROUNDHOGS had to play very early already, Sunday morning 11am. After little sleep for both musicians and audience it took only a few minutes for the people to realize what worldclass band had come to play for them early in the morning.
Extremely impressive to  see on DVD. First there are very few people in front of the stage, troopers and  connoisseurs only; but then within minutes only, the whole area between mixer tower and stage front is packed with enthused and cheering people.

Hardly ever a band has so impressingly ATTRACTED a audience. The MIGHTY GROUNDHOGS did!
